These hats are made from a fibrous material which is similar to jute and referred to as peser. They maintain their shape beautifully due to the durable material and will last for years to come. Each hat is adorned with a small vegetable dyed peser flower and braid on the rim. They have an internal band for comfort. The hats are made by several thousand refugees live on the Island of Madura, off the coast of Indonesia. They have been forced from the land they knew, and back to the land of their ancestors. Many of the women have taken up their ethnic indigenous craft of weaving from twine to create bags of all kinds. The women are now generating income for their families through their crocheting and beading of peser (like jute). Each sale supports these refugee families.
